Conclusion

Neoliberalism is an ideology that affects the political, economic, and social structures of the contemporary age. It has been influencing the system of higher education in such a way that it is limiting the democratic possibilities inherent in education, and it is doing so at a time when we are in desperate need of unleashing the human potential to affirmatively create, grow, hope, and learn. The fragmentation of the faculty and the weakening of faculty influence is part of a system that promotes increasing hierarchy and specialization that situates students as consumers and limits their chances of participating critically in an egalitarian society. C. Wright Mills said that the purpose of liberal education is to teach us how to participate in public life, how to avoid being drawn into the pitfalls of mass society, and, most of all, to keep us from being overwhelmed by the burdens of modern life.44 These purposes can only be fulfilled in an educational system that reflects democratic values, both in its curriculum and in its day-to-day operations. That leaves out the corporate neoliberal model of education.
